Dr. Shilpa Patel is an experienced optometrist who is passionate about providing high-quality, personalized eye care. Throughout her career, she has been involved in clinical care, research, teaching, and community service, always with the goal of helping patients achieve and maintain healthy vision.
A Commitment to Excellence
Dr. Patel has published numerous articles, manuscripts, and abstracts, as well as a book chapter, and has received grant funding for research involving diabetes, smoking, and glaucoma.
Her work and expertise have been recognized through several academic and clinical honors, including the AOF Michael G. Harris Ezell Fellowship and the Appreciation Award from the Aniridia International Foundation.
She is also a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and an active member of the American Academy of Optometry.
Leadership & Community Involvement
Dr. Patel believes that improving eye health extends beyond the exam room. Over the years, she has served on and contributed to organizations dedicated to improving vision, healthcare, education, and the community.
Her professional involvement has included work with organizations such as the Foundation Fighting Blindness, Alabama Vision Coalition, UAB National Alumni Society, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Alabama. She has also served as a consultant to Johnson & Johnson and the American Optometric Association.
Dr. Patel has served in editorial roles with the Journal of Interprofessional Practice and the Journal of the American Optometric Association, as well as contributed to research and education in the field of optometry.
